Hailing a cab in Mexico is now just that extra bit more difficult if you’re bloke. The city of Puebla is the latest municipality to provide a taxi service exclusively for women. Designed to reduce attacks on women by pervy drivers, the fleet of thirty-five hot pink Chevrolets are driven by women who will not stop for no man, no matter how hard he hails. Each cab is equipped with GPS, emergency panic buttons and wait for it … beauty kits for extra feminine appeal.
This initiative follows other cities globally that have implemented female-only public transport including London, Moscow, Dubai and Tehran, and although it has received criticism from some women’s groups saying it perpetuates the ‘meek and defenseless’, it has otherwise been warmly received.
At this stage, a complementary male-only service replete with an illegal casino, cigar lounge and water feature has not been planned.
