Remember to remember

Today at 11:00am many people around the world will be observing two minutes’ silence in their respective timezones for Remembrance/Veterans’ Day, commemorating those who scarified their lives in the various wars of the past century. Given that it’s a work day for most, what’s the protocol for solemness in the workplace?

1. Take your phone off the hook. It’s only a minute out of the day, so shut your yap and attempt to end any calls before the clock strikes eleven.

2. Respect others’ contemplation. It might not be your cup of tea, but keep your opinions to yourself. Don’t jeer or make fun of those who choose to pay respect.

3. Don’t be afraid to leave the room if you feel self-conscious. Step into the WC or outside if you feel you’ll be more comfortable.

Veteran Affairs’ protocol dictates that you are entitled to wear your poppy after Remembrance Day, however, use your better judgement when to take it off. If you find that you’re still wearing one next October, chances are you should bin it and buy another.
