Electronics manufacturer, Samsung has announced the release of two new phones in its Diva range, specifically targeted at women. The S7070 and S5150 handsets might be similar to any other cellular phone on the market, however, they have a couple of features that open up a Pandora’s box (and yes, I’m talking about those tacky charm bracelets) in the mobile telephony etiquette stakes.
The so-called ‘etiquette mode’ is probably the least offensive and most practical; allowing the user to turn the phone face-down to instantly silence it when it rings. Not such a bad idea when you’re at a funeral and your ringtone is C&C Music Factory’s ‘Everybody Dance Now’. (Curiously, Samsung’s notebook computers also have an ‘etiquette mode’, which cuts the fan noise to a low speed and slows the CPU when in quiet areas. It reeks of futility, if you ask me.)
Both handsets will come with photo retouching and enriching effects, “sensually designed fonts” (whatever that means), and most interestingly the ‘fake call’ function: the ability to depress the volume button discreetly and cause the phone to ring. In addition, the phone owner has the ability to pre-record a message so that they can pretend they are conversing with their imaginary caller.
Surely awkward social situations haven’t come to this? What happened to a good old faking diahorrea to get away from a close-talker? In the words of Michelle Tanner from 90s sitcom, Full House, “How rude!”
