‘Twitter’ and ‘vampire’ among top words of the year

Please excuse my sanctimonious acridity, but who didn’t see this coming? The social networking and 140-character display of exhibitionism and self-aggrandisement (I’m guilty as charged), Twitter has taken this year’s top word from the Global Language Monitor.

The annual survey of the English language saw that ‘Twitter’, follwed by ‘Obama’, ‘H1N1′, ’stimulus’ and ‘vampire’ were the most popular words in 2009.

‘Vampire’?! I mean, seriously? What is the world’s preoccupation with the occult? Stephanie Meyer et al have a lot to answer for. Everyone who is out there, pounding the pavement and hopelessly peddling their literary works shares the pain inflicted by that morbid soft porn for adolescents girls and campires. Throw a vampire into any concept and expect an advance to land in your lap. Gosh, a brunch of old crones, barely any life left in them, sitting around talking about days gone by would be considered entertainment if it didn’t exist already—it’s called Antiques Roadshow.
