Cool homewares for chic geeks

Something you might not know about me: one of my hidden talents is my ability to recite the greater part of the Periodic Table of Elements. A lthough I narrowly scraped in on my biology exam and swapped chemistry for the tanning bed, this weird throwback to high school is simultaneously incongruous and delightful. I digress.

The more scientifcally-minded, design duo Federica Castagno and Sara Petrucci of Acquacalda exhibited their beautifully simple-yet-sophisticated range of homewares entitled “Fisica Applicata”, or “Applied Physics” at the recent Milan Design Week. Using the principles of science and combining them with sleek design, they have achieved a balance between form and function.

A simple soup bowl becomes a kitchen scale when immersed in water thanks to Archimedes’ Principle and some helpful markers to determine the contents’ weight. Precision cocktail making is made simple with the “Mix In Glass”, which uses air and liquid pressure to measure doses of mixers to ensure your Pergroni is just right. And a stunning glass instrument that is a throwback to the lab decants wine equally and evenly between four diners to ensure no one’s glass is at low tide.

Not stopping at kitchenware, the collection also has a ceramic and glass flowerpot that allows you to leave and forget your precious African violets and a vase that ‘communicates’ just how much water is left in the bottom for your fresh-cut roses.

Who ever said science wasn’t an art?
