‘Tis the Season for Over-Sharing: Christmas Cards and Chunder Letters

There’s nothing like the onset of the festive season for people to become a little sentimental and to wax lyrically about the year that’s been. Although the tradition of sending Christmas cards might be losing popularity, those who continue the practice often turn the act of spreading of goodwill into an exercise in vanity. The most ostentatious are seldom satisfied with the card alone and include a periodical of the year that has been, often without consideration for modesty or relevance. In my family we call them ‘chunder letters’; so called because they are near imposible to wade through without a trusty bucket at hand.

Its the over-sharing that’s probably the most grating: “Shane completed his apprenticeship and impregnated three girls this year”; “Mary commemorated her hysterectomy by having her uterus plasticised and turned into a fruit bowl”; or “Baby Jake finally started eating solids, which was reflected in his stool.” Generally, the rule of thumb is if you haven’t seen the recipient in 20 years, chances are they don’t care. There’s a place for ranting unabashedly about one’s life: they’re called blogs.

This Christmas, perhaps opt for this lovely holiday stationery from Pinhole Press whose designs are tasteful; both as gifts and as personalised writing paper.

This set is conveniently coloured orange so you instantly know where the carrot came from.
