POLL: Is Makeup on Tweens and Teenagers Appropriate?

Now for something a little horrifying: mega-retailer, Wal-Mart has launched a beauty range targeted at the tween market. TheGeoGirl line proposes eight products aimed at eight-to-twelve-year-olds who wear makeup. According to the line’s manufacturer, each product is made with natural ingredients, comes in recyclable packaging and is named after revolting text message slang:

  • J4G (Just 4 Grins) SPF 15 Lip Balm
  • T2G (Time To Go) Cleanser
  • QTPi (Cutie Pie) Mineral Blush
  • iCU (I See You) Liquid2Powder Shadow
  • TiSC (This is So Cool) Body Mist
  • FYEO (For Your Eyes Only) Feather Lash Mascara
  • GR8 (Great) Lipshine
  • URA* (You Are A Star) Face Shimmer

I don’t know what I find more disturbing—the fact that each product is named after a bastardisation of the English language or girls under the age of sixteen are wearing makeup! Sure, every little girl has at one stage looked at their mother putting on her makeup and hoped to emulate it one day, but should children be sexualised at such a young age? The purpose of makeup is to conceal and enhance, but girls who are prepubescent presumably have nothing to conceal, nor womanly features to enhance, so what’s the point?

Do you think girls aged 8-12 are too young to be wearing makeup?
