When anyone mutters the word ‘origami’ I tend to recoil in horror. No, I do not have some bizarre phobia of folded paper, but it does bring back painful recollections of when I was five years old. I’d be dumped at the local public library on the school holiday Easter break on an almost daily basis while my mother would stroll a shopping centre and add to her ever-growing shoe archive. I, however, would be forced to fold paper all crafternoon until my fingers bled and I cried. I would have much preferred to make a pair of Nikes in that little sweatshop.
Why, just last night I was forced to confront my fears as an adult after a late-night run to the Golden Arteries and had to fold a McDonaldland cookies box into a jumping frog as per the instructions on the side. Alas, it didn’t quite resemble a frog, nor did it jump, but perhaps I have conquered my fear of papier plié. Just as well: Champagne Veuve Clicquot have collaborated with Mathias van de Walle to make the world’s first foldable origami ice bucket, named “Clicq’Up”. It’s reusable, transportable and like adopted children from Third World countries, doesn’t take up much space.
