Only last week, my dear Aunt Mabel said, “Where can I find a chandelier shaped like a penis?” and I smiled wistfully (for her benefit) and said, “Aunt Mabel, I don’t know.”
But that’s no longer the case, thanks to artist, Hans van Bentem from design collective, Rock and Royal. While chandeliers have been dazzling displays of wealth, they have been terribly encumbered by the conceit of their form: same tiers, same crystals, same mind-numbing number of lights or candles. That’s over now.
Rock and Royal is to chandeliers what Ed Hardy is to t-shirts and has created a vision which would be at home in any number of the pads of “stars” from Jersey Shore. Describing its work as “beautiful fusions of an old tradition and new artistic vision,” Rock and Royal can truly lay claim to ensuring that chandeliers will never again be thought of exclusively as placid, elegant or tasteful.
