I’ve often fantasised about having my own fragrance one day. Not one of those tacky celebrity Kardashiltonbieber numbers that smell like an armpit that’s done the rounds of an ashtray and a bag of icing sugar; but something refined, representative of my personality and … exclusive.
Our olfactory sense is arguably one of the most important; possessing the ability to both lure and repulse others, and to conjure memories bygone. When Tom Ford was creating his designer dozen of unisex scents, his brief was that it should “smell like a man’s crutch.” Delightful. And of course there were the rumours that his Tusan Leather perfume smelt like cocaine. Of course, few were willing to confirm this as doing so would have been an admission of guilt that they actually knew how cocaine smelt.
Instead, one should to aspire to have an homage made after them. Like Hermès’ namesake Birkin and Kelly bags, both named after great women in history, comes a scent named after a man adored by others of their ilk: Christiaan. Surname, Houtenbos, Christiaan was the hairstylist to the stars. Known as the man who gave Grace Jones her signature flat-top hairdo, he came to represent everything gentlemanly and marvellous about the fashion industry.
As such, perfume house, Byredo has named a fragrance after the ladies’ man; the aptly titled Mister Marvelous. With notes of mandarin and black amber, neroli flower and white cedarwood the eau de parfum is distinctive and unusual, kind of like some of the women with whom he has worked.
