Luxury Sniff Test: Roja Dove’s Olfactory Introduction to the Macallan Whisky

Some men, namely heavy drinkers, choose to wear their signature scent, Eau de L’Hobo, most mornings after a hard session on the brown spirits. It’s not easily disguised, much less masked by a heavy dousing of Aramis or similar relics of the 1980s, yet some attempt albeit unsuccessfully. Alcohol and fragrance are not usually regarded together in a positive light, so the latest collaboration between The Macallan whisky and perfumery Roja Dove Haute Perfumerie is an unusual association.

As a rather fancy way of introducing the whisky blending process to the novice, The Macallan with Roja Dove Sensory Experience contains specially selected scents that highlight the various essences contained within the single malt that would otherwise go unnoticed by those who aren’t au fait’s with the liquor’s finer characteristics.

No stranger to high-end collaborations—The Macallan once sold a range in an elegant Lalique crystal bottle—the “aroma station” is presented in an oak casket made by Scottish cabinet-maker, Duke Christie, with various fragrances arranged like an apothecary’s cabinet.

Incidentally, Mr Dove is not a fan of whisky himself after a teenage overindulgence rendered it unpalatable (much like my aversion to Cointreau) and he never tasted any actual Macallan in the process. For shame!
