One of the more gentlemanly of sports is hunting, killing and mounting (in the non-zoophilic sense) one’s own prey, despite what the animal liberationists have to say on the subject. Recently, taxidermy has reared its head (my apologies) to once again become a stylish and edgy addition to any interior, because who doesn’t want a creepy pair of glass eyes following them around the room. As the proud owner of a stuffed-and-mounted leopard by the name of Neville, I can attest to the lure of taxidermy and the addictive nature of the acquisition of other pelts—just take a look at my winter wardrobe.
Another recent trend has been a return to handicrafts that until now have been reserved for arthritic grannies who are still adept with a crewel needle. Leceister-based artist, Shauna Richardson is a “crochetdermist”, creating crocheted animal trophies that are part-plush toy, part-sport. More than just sculpture, they’re shot, photographically speaking, mis-en-scène to contrast these handmade wild animals in an urban environment.
Her work bears (again, sorry) some resemblance to the very in-vogue and also British artist, Billie Archilleos and the animal sculptures she created for Louis Vuitton, made from bags, wallets and other small leathergoods for various product launches and window displays. Although, the only animal that has had any involvement in Miss Richardson’s art is the humble sheep. Which reminds me—it’s time to put the lamb in the oven. Turrah!
